Lung-cancer screening can save patients' lives

Lung cancer kills more men and women than any other cancer, and has been on the rise in recent decades. The number of female patients with lung cancer has increased rapidly. The No. 1 cause of lung cancer is smoking; However, people who have never smoked also get lung cancer.

In an article published in the June issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, new research has shown that deaths from lung cancer was finally reduced when patients took control tomography chest CT.

The scans were done on an annual basis, three years in a row, in patients aged 55 to 30 years of history of smoking. The scanning technique used in the study patients exposed to much less radiation than a standard CT scans - one-eighth the normal amount. Most importantly, a 20 percent reduction in mortality was observed in patients treated with CT compared to those treated with chest radiographs.

As an oncologist, I treat patients who almost all come to me with advanced lung cancer. Even with the recent developments in the treatment of lung cancer, the average patient in advanced lung cancer live only one year after chemotherapy and other treatments. My patients always ask if they could have done anything to detect lung cancer earlier. In the past, my answer is no, because one has no symptoms until they have advanced disease. But now, my answer is that they have chest CT has been shown to detect small cancers of the lungs long before the creation of symptoms, when there is still time to save the life of the patient. Screening CT scans lung show much more detail than X-rays do. The images are 3-D, so the tiniest of lung tumors can be detected.

Computed tomography has an issue from many clinical studies and much debate during the last decade. There are concerns about overexposure to radiation from repeated CT scans. And there are concerns that the CT scan will add extra weight to an already overburdened health care system, but fail to save lives. There are about 7 million people in the U.S. that meet the selection criteria described in a recent study (aged 55 and older with 30 years history of smoking). This would mean that about one million lives could be saved if the initial screening program was set up at national level.

As with any process of cancer screening, there are concerns to consider. We view CT scans produce false-positive readings? Will healthy patients undergoing unnecessary aggressive treatment that might cause them more harm than good? Can all these examinations and treatment add a new layer of costs to an already overloaded system of reimbursement health?

As a professional with many years in the first line treatment of patients with lung cancer, I believe that this study provides strong evidence that we can identify lung cancer now before it produces symptoms, when it can still be cured, and before has spread.

There are some trials of cancer screening whose efficacy has recently been questioned: the PSA test prostate cancer and mammography can detect small, early-stage cancer, but the aggressive and often physically damaging interventions have become the standard Treatment now thought to be unnecessary in most cases.

Here is the question: Should people who smoke, but have no symptoms of lung cancer begin regular lung CT chest control, such as patients who have normal Pap smears, mammograms and colonoscopies?

Some control procedures provide more definitive answers than others. Screening for colorectal cancer, for example, has clearly proven very effective in saving lives. I believe that this new lung cancer screening study presents the same kind of clarity.

My father died in 1993 from lung cancer. My brother and I are both doctors, felt helpless. At that time, there was no available medical technology could have detected the cancer my father earlier. If we had CT detection technology then, probably would have detected the cancer at an early stage and could still be alive today.

The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, we decided to create an entirely new preventive oncology department for educating patients about preventive services that can save their lives - such as CT scanning.
