Chemo cutting breast cancer deaths

Modern chemotherapy drugs cut deaths from breast cancer by about a third, a study has shown.

The researchers analyzed pooled data from 123 trials involving nearly 100,000 women made during the last four decades.

They found that the model of the 1980 chemotherapy reduced death rates from breast cancer for nearly one quarter.

Effective modern drugs reduce mortality by one third to about a wide range of patients, compared with no chemotherapy.

The impact on death rates applied to all women regardless of age, tumor size, the level of spread, and whether the cancer fueled by estrogen.

In "ER-positive" cancers that are sensitive to estrogen, chemotherapy plus hormone (disrupters) treatment was more effective than hormone therapy alone.
