Thursday marked the World Day against lung cancer, doctors say changing lifestyles, smoking and air pollution has increased alarmingly, the number of lung problems.
"There's a huge increase in the number of lung cancer and other lung diseases cases," Harit Chaturvedi, CEO and Director (Surgical Oncology) at the Max Hospital here, told us.
"Usually the peak age, when the attacks of lung cancer is the '50s and '60s," he said, adding that cases of cancer occur in Indian patients a decade earlier than Western counterparts "for unknown reasons."
Along with cancer, grows as fast as cases Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which causes acute breathing problems also associated with smoking in most cases.
"Currently, India has nearly 24 million COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), cases are expected to increase by 34 percent to 32 million by 2020," said Vivek Nangia, additional director and head, pulmonology, the Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
"The number of men with COPD is approximately 14,110,000, and a half times more than the number of women in 2010 was approximately 9,570,000," he says.
According to Nangia, smoking is the main cause of COPD also causes cancer in the long term, in many cases.
"Most COPD patients are former or current smokers who experienced morning cough and sputum, the intensity of which increases progressively with age and the patient develops shortness of breath," he says.
"We can put serious limitations on daily activities of the patient. Common acute increase in symptoms may lead to repeated visits to the clinic or hospital doctors 'confessions', he adds.
The biggest problem remains, however, that lung problems are often overlooked and go undiagnosed because of lack of information.
"Symptoms such as cough, blood in sputum and throat irritation are often ignored because they are common symptoms," says Chaturvedi.
"In general, healthy people are not thinking about the disease," he says.
The doctor adds that smokers generally after the age of 40 should go for annual X-rays to check the status of their lungs.
"Quitting smoking is the best choice, but also reduce the frequency helps in a big way," he says.
