Lung cancer kills more men and women than any other cancer, and has been on the rise in recent decades. The number of female patients with lung cancer has increased rapidly. The No. 1 cause of lung cancer is smoking; However, people who have never smoked also get lung cancer.
In an article published in the June issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, new research has shown that deaths from lung cancer was finally reduced when patients took control tomography chest CT.
The scans were done on an annual basis, three years in a row, in patients aged 55 to 30 years of history of smoking. The scanning technique used in the study patients exposed to much less radiation than a standard CT scans - one-eighth the normal amount. Most importantly, a 20 percent reduction in mortality was observed in patients treated with CT compared to those treated with chest radiographs.
As an oncologist, I treat patients who almost all come to me with advanced lung cancer. Even with the recent developments in the treatment of lung cancer, the average patient in advanced lung cancer live only one year after chemotherapy and other treatments. My patients always ask if they could have done anything to detect lung cancer earlier. In the past, my answer is no, because one has no symptoms until they have advanced disease. But now, my answer is that they have chest CT has been shown to detect small cancers of the lungs long before the creation of symptoms, when there is still time to save the life of the patient. Screening CT scans lung show much more detail than X-rays do. The images are 3-D, so the tiniest of lung tumors can be detected.
Computed tomography has an issue from many clinical studies and much debate during the last decade. There are concerns about overexposure to radiation from repeated CT scans. And there are concerns that the CT scan will add extra weight to an already overburdened health care system, but fail to save lives. There are about 7 million people in the U.S. that meet the selection criteria described in a recent study (aged 55 and older with 30 years history of smoking). This would mean that about one million lives could be saved if the initial screening program was set up at national level.
As with any process of cancer screening, there are concerns to consider. We view CT scans produce false-positive readings? Will healthy patients undergoing unnecessary aggressive treatment that might cause them more harm than good? Can all these examinations and treatment add a new layer of costs to an already overloaded system of reimbursement health?
As a professional with many years in the first line treatment of patients with lung cancer, I believe that this study provides strong evidence that we can identify lung cancer now before it produces symptoms, when it can still be cured, and before has spread.
There are some trials of cancer screening whose efficacy has recently been questioned: the PSA test prostate cancer and mammography can detect small, early-stage cancer, but the aggressive and often physically damaging interventions have become the standard Treatment now thought to be unnecessary in most cases.
Here is the question: Should people who smoke, but have no symptoms of lung cancer begin regular lung CT chest control, such as patients who have normal Pap smears, mammograms and colonoscopies?
Some control procedures provide more definitive answers than others. Screening for colorectal cancer, for example, has clearly proven very effective in saving lives. I believe that this new lung cancer screening study presents the same kind of clarity.
My father died in 1993 from lung cancer. My brother and I are both doctors, felt helpless. At that time, there was no available medical technology could have detected the cancer my father earlier. If we had CT detection technology then, probably would have detected the cancer at an early stage and could still be alive today.

Britons to take part in Cuban lung cancer vaccine trial
HAVANA — British patients will soon take part in a trial of a Cuban-designed therapeutic lung cancer vaccine, the first of its kind, a company executive announced.
"A new clinical study of the therapeutic lung cancer vaccine (called Cimavaz-EFG)" will begin "in a matter of days with a group of patients in the United Kingdom," said Erik D'Hondt, scientific director for the Malaysian drug company Bioven, who is in charge of European distribution of the drug.
D'Hondt did not say how many patients were taking part in the study.
The vaccine was developed by scientists at the Molecular Immunological Center (CIM) in Havana.
Its tests in Cuba found promising results in more than 1,000 patients.
CIM researcher Zoraida Acosta said scientists are encouraged because the drug has shown benefits in terms of extending life span and improving quality of life even in late-stage lung cancer patient.
They say their goal is for the cancer to become an illness that does not progress even if it cannot be cured. The vaccine's potential also is being looked at for treatment of uterine, breast and prostate cancers, Cuban officials said.

"A new clinical study of the therapeutic lung cancer vaccine (called Cimavaz-EFG)" will begin "in a matter of days with a group of patients in the United Kingdom," said Erik D'Hondt, scientific director for the Malaysian drug company Bioven, who is in charge of European distribution of the drug.
D'Hondt did not say how many patients were taking part in the study.
The vaccine was developed by scientists at the Molecular Immunological Center (CIM) in Havana.
Its tests in Cuba found promising results in more than 1,000 patients.
CIM researcher Zoraida Acosta said scientists are encouraged because the drug has shown benefits in terms of extending life span and improving quality of life even in late-stage lung cancer patient.
They say their goal is for the cancer to become an illness that does not progress even if it cannot be cured. The vaccine's potential also is being looked at for treatment of uterine, breast and prostate cancers, Cuban officials said.

Lung cancer mostly diagnosed late
The cases of chronic pulmonary disease and lung cancer is rapidly rising in India, which remain largely undetected until it is too late, experts say.
Thursday marked the World Day against lung cancer, doctors say changing lifestyles, smoking and air pollution has increased alarmingly, the number of lung problems.
"There's a huge increase in the number of lung cancer and other lung diseases cases," Harit Chaturvedi, CEO and Director (Surgical Oncology) at the Max Hospital here, told us.
"Usually the peak age, when the attacks of lung cancer is the '50s and '60s," he said, adding that cases of cancer occur in Indian patients a decade earlier than Western counterparts "for unknown reasons."
Along with cancer, grows as fast as cases Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which causes acute breathing problems also associated with smoking in most cases.
"Currently, India has nearly 24 million COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), cases are expected to increase by 34 percent to 32 million by 2020," said Vivek Nangia, additional director and head, pulmonology, the Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
"The number of men with COPD is approximately 14,110,000, and a half times more than the number of women in 2010 was approximately 9,570,000," he says.
According to Nangia, smoking is the main cause of COPD also causes cancer in the long term, in many cases.
"Most COPD patients are former or current smokers who experienced morning cough and sputum, the intensity of which increases progressively with age and the patient develops shortness of breath," he says.
"We can put serious limitations on daily activities of the patient. Common acute increase in symptoms may lead to repeated visits to the clinic or hospital doctors 'confessions', he adds.
The biggest problem remains, however, that lung problems are often overlooked and go undiagnosed because of lack of information.
"Symptoms such as cough, blood in sputum and throat irritation are often ignored because they are common symptoms," says Chaturvedi.
"In general, healthy people are not thinking about the disease," he says.
The doctor adds that smokers generally after the age of 40 should go for annual X-rays to check the status of their lungs.
"Quitting smoking is the best choice, but also reduce the frequency helps in a big way," he says.
