WEST Richland - When Patt Mosley sees pink this month, does not cry anymore. Four years ago, that has not happened.
The 41-year-old West Richland woman was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2007.
At that time, Hanford High School graduate living in Portland with her husband and 2-year-old son.
"That day is seared into my mind," he said. "I was only 37 and I was diagnosed four days before" the pink month. ""
Emotionally, he was trying to wrap her head around the fact that she had breast cancer, then it was breast cancer awareness month.
"I cried every day. It was salt in the wound, "he said.
One day he called her husband from the grocery store because a can of soup has a pink label.
"He asked me what kind of soup was," he said with a laugh. "Then, put it in a pink bag! It was a rough 31 days. Fortunately, I was medicated for more than half of it. "
Demonstrated that breast cancer was the least of her concerns.
In fact, you might just have saved her life.
After enduring a bilateral mastectomy, a scan revealed a hot spot beneath the sternum Mosley. Was thymoma, cancer of the thymus gland - and it was ugly. He had begun to wrap around the lungs, nerves and arteries.
"It was a completely different cancer not related to breast cancer," he said. "This volume will kill me. I was fortunate to have breast cancer because they had no symptoms. If not for breast cancer would not have known about this other volume. "
A planned three-hour surgery ended taking nine hours. Even then, doctors could not get everything.
Mosley next face chemotherapy. Not worried about going bald - "I look good without hair" - but a terrible fear of vomiting.
During chemotherapy, she had a severe allergic reaction to one of the drugs which killed around. In a period of two years, went through chemo, radiation and seven surgeries, including removal of the ovaries to further reduce the risk of cancer.
Throughout the ordeal, her strength from her family, including her husband, Duke, and his son, Gannon.
"When you're faced with his own mortality, you have to dig deep and figure out if they are to die or to say," I'm going to do what I should do. "I looked at my son and decided to take it exactly as came, "he said. "It was difficult. Nothing about having cancer is not easy, but 80 percent of the battle has a good attitude. "
When you get down, Mosley used humor to sustain itself. At one point, he had won £ 20 from steroids used to treat medical, and had lost all her hair. She turned to her husband and said: "Can you imagine you'd be married to a bald, overweight freak with no eyebrows?"
All treatments and surgeries that took place in Portland. Two years ago, returned to the tri-cities to live near her family, and now works for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in marketing and communications.
And while the pink color does not make her cry anymore, do not leave her wondering.
"I think it's great that there is much knowledge, and I own a lot of pink things," he said. "On the other hand, I am becoming more cynical. They take this very serious disease and commerce. Do you really care about the awareness of breast cancer, or are they trying to increase the disease for profit? "
Either way, she is proud to survive, but be ready to go.
"I am grateful for those who struggle. At the same time I want to live my life and not let cancer to control it."
