The study, released Wednesday, describes tests in which three species of primates who responded to injections of synthetic peptide by eating less, losing belly fat and show changes in metabolic function may keep at bay type 2 diabetes - a frequent consequence of obesity.
The secret behind the cure: killing fat cells by robbing them of the blood supply that nourishes them.
This strategy, known as inhibition of angiogenesis is the basis for more than 15 medications used to treat brain cancer, colon, lung and kidney. The new study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, is the first control strategy in primates as a treatment for obesity.
After four weeks of daily injections of adipotide four weeks and a follow-up without treatment - and without being forced changes in diet or exercise - 10 rhesus macaques obese women lost an average 11% of body weight and 39% fat.
Much of that loss came in three weeks after the drug was discontinued in the treated macaques continued to become lighter and leaner.
Study author Dr. Wadih Arap, oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, who pioneered the approach with his wife, Renata Pasqualini, a cancer researcher at the Centre, expressed his satisfaction with their weight loss monkeys and metabolic improvements. However, he admitted that "we are just at a loss to explain" all the results in two types of macaques and a small group of baboons tested.
