Cancer council backs screening calls

The Cancer Council of Australia supported calls for women to be given more information about the potential for mammograms se''yper tis''argi-diagnosed cancers that would never cause harm.

Earlier this week, Monash University epidemiologist Robin Bell, said women should be aware of about 5 to 30 percent ekato''yper-diagnosi''rythmos in screening for breast, which could lead to unnecessary treatment and the stress.

Her comments followed a study that found most of the estimated 28 percent reduction in deaths from breast cancer between 1991 and 2007 in Australia could be attributed to better treatments, but early detection through screening, as previously believed before.

Cancer Council headed by Professor Ian Olver said yesterday while BreastScreen Australia program has continued to save lives, agreed women should be informed gia''yper-diagnosi''-cancers that would never develop symptoms during a woman's life.

''There is no doubt that screening saves lives, but there is a slight risk will be diagnosed with cancer will not hurt,''he said.

Because there is no way to know which cancers picked up by a mammogram will proceed or slow growth, ena''ypervolika''diagnosi can lead to unnecessary investigations and treatments.

Professor Olver also calls for the federal government to respond to a review of 2009, the BreastScreen program said it should be restricted to women aged 40 to 44 and those over 75 years because of doubts about the benefits they offered.

The review said although the agency should continue to focus on women 50 to 69, due bills, cutting deaths through early detection, there was limited evidence of benefit for other age groups. The review noted that there is no evidence the program was harming the women in the early 40s, through the highest levels of research.
