When my cousin died of breast cancer more than 10 years, I made an annual ritual to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a group devoted to prevention, treatment and cure of this dreaded disease.
Sometimes, some friends and relatives will say that we can give to Komen for one reason or another. He was angry that the organization is funded Family Planning and gave workshops designed and tested animals.
I would shake my head vigorously in sanctimonious fools who claimed to be pro-life and then hypocritically behave differently. Or would you answer that arguments for human rather than animal studies, while valid, there was reason to disband the rescue efforts of an organization dedicated to ending breast cancer.
Whether someone is crazy about the right or left, still crazy and deserves my scorn.
Last week, I found myself in a conundrum.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure attracted funding for Planned Parenthood, and I was outraged. Suddenly, the different kinds of friends asking me to stop raising money for the team.
It was not that a pink pickle?
After several days of intense public pressure, Komen has changed its decision. Genre. Planned Parenthood announced they could continue to apply for grants, but left unclear as to whether or not these grants should be approved.
This episode has come into question Komen political connections and always have tarnished its reputation. For some, the reversal in Planned Parenthood is just not enough to reverse the boycott.
Disease-fighting money can come from and go, just like-minded individuals. I prefer working with groups that are open minded and tolerant, but I've always thought that the refusal to help worthy organizations based on ideology is wrong. The inertia really affects us all.
At the same time, I can not help but wonder if it is worth Komen fundraising efforts and my money. Perhaps you should give the American Cancer Society Planned Parenthood or directly. Provide prevention and treatment, and is more aligned with my values.
There are no easy answers to this question, and those who disagree are not thinking hard enough.
If you refuse to help Komen because we are opposed to politically or socially, then I am stricken with breast cancer, I have no right to treatment or treatments funded by Komen; wonder.
However, there is some worth to vote with your wallet. Boycott my list includes companies that pollute the environment and employ child laborers.
Oh, I'll even walk for a cure. We raise money to end breast cancer and help those involved in the disease. In benefits, car washes and candy sales will come together with others and to help find solutions that could benefit granddaughters, nieces or cousins.
I will fight a disease that takes away too many wonderful souls, poor and fair. But I can not say for sure which organization will get my money. I do not think so a little harder.
