Breast cancer can’t keep local woman down

Sarah Haynes says he is the luckiest woman in the world.

"I tell people," he said, laughing, "Jesus loves you, but I'm his favorite."

The mother of two and grandmother four is twice survivor of breast cancer who, using golden years to travel.

She's been in Russia, Egypt, Ireland, Italy and Mexico and plans to go soon to the Panama Canal.

Husband Gary gave her a trip to Italy for the 50th wedding anniversary in June 2007 - the same year he was diagnosed the second time with breast cancer - and said he took his niece on the trip.

Wife Haynes «died later that summer.

She said she always wanted to travel, but was not able to grow well.

But he said he said he wanted to go and travel, so it is.

Haynes was the first of mastectomy in December 1984 when he was 48 years.

He said he felt something like an English peas on the side of her breasts.

"That was so stupid," he said, "was not doing anything about it, had not even keep in my mind."

She said her grandmother had cancer in the mid 40s and her mother had breast cancer when she was in the 50.

But he said none of them died from breast cancer or anything associated with the disease.

This framework helped Haynes »of mind when going through treatment.

"I never thought I was going to die," said Haynes. "I never was afraid."

He said he had reconstructive surgery or after mastectomy. Haynes said her husband told her after the first surgery did not want to go through any more pain than what he had to.
